"weekly once"?

The Confidence Corner

The Mistake
The Mistake: When speaking about an activity that occurs daily, weekly, yearly, etc., English speakers in India often say phrases such as:

  • Weekly twice, I visit my cousin.
  • I go to the doctor yearly once.
  • I check my email daily five times.
These phrases are NOT proper English. Avoid them.
The Correction
The Correction: Speak correctly and with confidence by first saying the number of times something happens. Then, say the period in which it happens:

  • Twice a week, I visit my cousin.
  • I go to the doctor once a year.
  • I check my email five times a day.

Remember the formula:
[number of times] + [a time period]
