'The Confidence Corner'
English Tip
The Mistake: When talking about physical pain, we English speakers in India often use pain as a verb:
- My stomach is paining at the moment.
- Vimal's back has been paining since his accident.
It is best to avoid describing physical pain in this way.
The Correction: Speak more naturally and with confidence by describing physical pain with the words "in pain" or "hurts":
- My stomach is hurting at the moment.
- His back has been in pain since the bike accident.
However, when describing emotional discomfort, it is not uncommon to use pain as a verb:
- It pains me to see how unhappy my sister is.
- It pained my father to accept money from his cousin.
