can't able

The Confidence Corner

The Mistake
The Mistake: When speaking about the inability to do something, English speakers in India often use the phrase "can't able":

  • We can't able to come to class tomorrow.
  • can't able to find my keys.
The phrase "can't able" is NOT correct English. Avoid it.
The Correction
The Correction: Speak correctly and with confidence by using either "can't" or "unable" (not both words) to talk about the inability to do something in the present:

  • We can't come to class tomorrow.
  • We are unable to come to class tomorrow.
  • can't find my keys.
  • I am unable to find my keys.
